Why You Should Build an Outdoor Kitchen Area

14 July 2010 1,124 views No Comment

A new and exciting outdoor cooking development has been making its way from obscurity to the top of home improvement news.  Outdoor kitchens are becoming increasingly popular.  Putting an outdoor kitchen in the back of your yard might sound pretty silly at first.  Why would you want a kitchen on both the inside and outside?  Let me ask you this question; how many of you like to grill?   That’s what I thought.

In addition to the outdoor grill that is staple to most of America, outdoor kitchen design can include things such as sinks, televisions, bars, ice makers, outdoor electric fireplaces, wine coolers, couches, water taps, side-burners, fire pits, gas grills, and so much more.  Outdoor kitchen ideas are virtually limitless.  Some people are even putting outdoor kitchen cabinets in their outdoor kitchen!  It has been said that some experts believe that 20% of all new homes built in the coming years will be built with outdoor kitchens already installed.  This crazy idea is slowly going to turn into a staple “room” for your house.

There are a number of advantages to outdoor cooking that you will notice over the classic indoor cooking.  For starters, it is much, much easier to get your guests or family involved while you’re cooking.  There is a lot more room outside, and it’s likely that your outdoor kitchen area is much larger than your regular kitchen.  This provides a much more social aspect to the evening when everyone can at least be together while the food cooks, even if they are not directly helping.  Kids can be outside playing, guests can be playing horse shoes or another outside yard game.  You will even be able to join while you cook!

Outdoor kitchens obviously need to be a little more practical than your standard indoor kitchen.  While it would be nice to have refrigeration outside, it’s not necessary.  The only things you really need for a barebones outdoor kitchen is an outdoor grill and a small oven.  This type of setup will probably cost you in the range of $1000-$2000.

If you’re looking for a little extra convenience and luxury, you can start adding other things to your outdoor kitchen plan.  Starting with cabinets and a sink will probably be your first stop, followed by whatever you felt you wanted most.  You could go with a brick flooring area to make it a little nicer, or perhaps put in a television enclosure in order to not miss any of the big game.   Maybe put a roof over your kitchen or add an outdoor fireplace.
