Benefits of a Gas Fireplace Insert

28 July 2010 2,608 views No Comment

Gas fireplace inserts can be used in both indoor and outdoor gas fireplaces.  They replace wood in your fireplace and most are replicated to look like burning wood.  A gas fireplace insert is multiple times more efficient in providing warmth than a traditional fireplace, usually about 85% more efficient than a standard wood burning fireplace.  You also get the added benefit of not having to carry wood inside, clean out the hearth, or worry about replacing all of the time.  In addition, a gas fireplace insert is safer, easier, and cleaner to use.

Another great benefit of gas fireplace inserts is that you can turn them on and off by switch.  With wood burning stoves you have to let them burn out. Gas fireplace inserts are usually made of ceramic or steel firebox covered with a fake wood look-alike that sits on top of it to give it a classic look.

Gas fireplace inserts are environmentally friendly as well.  They produce cleaner flames than wood alone and produce less pollution.  Since they are also more efficient, they can produce more effective heat with less energy required than your standard wood flame.

Most gas fireplace inserts require ventilation, so keep this in mind.  There are some vent less fireplaces out there, but these usually are not the ones to go with. The vent comes with a self sealed combustion system that aids in the efficiency of the insert.  By pulling in outside air, roughly 85 percent of the heat that the gas fireplace insert generates remains in the house.  Compare this to the 10 percent of a standard wood stove and you can see that gas fireplace inserts clearly have an advantage in efficiency.  The direct vent pipe also pushes all of the combustion exhaust to the outside of the house, therefore preventing any of the gases produced to affect your indoor air quality.  You cannot say this about a typical wood burning system.

Gas fireplace inserts conceal their gas tube well, but still allow for easy access to add gas when needed.  Fireplaces with inserts are much easier to clean as well.
