Information About Your Natural Gas Grill

12 July 2010 358 views No Comment

The Arawak Indian tribe used a wooden structure to roast meat in the pre-colonial Americas.  This was the first instance of known grilling.  At first, the grill was referred to as the wooden structure and not the act of actual grilling, but in recent times grilling has become a verb of its own.  Originally grilling was used to slow cook hogs, and variations in preparing them have lead to the different kinds of barbecue techniques you find today in different areas of the United States.  The outdoor natural gas grill was invented in Little Rock, Arkansas by William G. Wepfer and Melton Lancaster of the Arkansas Louisiana Gas Company in the 1960’s.  Wepfer was looking for new ways to sell natural gas to residential customers and redesigned the charcoal grill in order to sell more gas.

Natural gas grills are available in many different shapes and sizes.  From small single steak grills all the way up to industrial sized restaurant grills that could feed more than a hundred people.  Gas barbecue grills typically use natural gas or propane as the source of fuel.  Then the gas flame cooks the food, or powers a heating element that then heats the food. Here is a review for a Weber Genesis grill.

Typical designs of the majority of all residential gas grills follow a very basic pattern.  The gas is generally held underneath the grill itself.  There may or may not be shelves on the side for sitting things on.  There are usually at least 2 wheels attached to the cart itself to make moving the gas barbecue grill around easy. Speaking of moving around easily, portable gas grills can be convenient when on the road or camping.   Smaller than their gas bbq grill counterparts, a portable gas grill could be just what your camping trip is missing!

Recently, gas bbq grills have been adding infrared radiant burners to the backside of the grill.  This allows an even heat across the entire burner and is intended for use as a rotisserie.  The chicken beef or pork you decide to rotisserie is rotated by an electric motor.  The flattop grill is also becoming quite popular on gas bbq grills.  The food is never exposed to an open flame and the food cooks food much like you wood on a griddle.  Smoke boxes can also be added, however it is difficult to maintain the low sustained temperature required for that smoky flavor as compared to a charcoal grill.

As mentioned above, infrared gas grills are becoming popular as well.  Natural gas is used to superheat ceramic tile which in turn cooks the food.  This type of heating is very uniform and is very hot which allows searing of food quickly and easily.  Infrared is different from other forms of grilling.  It heats the food directly instead of using hot air to heat the food.  This results in less pre-heating time and less drying out.  This leads to juicier meat and enthusiasts say that it seems much more like a char-grill than a typical gas grill ever good.  While still expensive, the price is coming down and provides the advantages of uniform cooking, better control over the heat source, and instant ignition of the heat.  If you’re looking for a slightly cheaper grill than the one we showed you earlier, the following is highly recommended.

While shunned by many grilling purists, gas grills are an extremely convenient and competitive alternative to charcoal.  The food tastes similar, there is no charcoal to buy or use, and there is no charcoal residue to clean up.  If you’re looking for quick and easy (and who isn’t?) consider a gas grill.
